Fifty Shades Freed

In holdover news, Fifty Shades Freed crossed $300 million worldwide. The third film in the E.L. James erotic bondage trilogy has now earned $306.7m on a $55m budget, including $217.4m overseas. The film should have around $6.7m (-61%) for its third domestic weekend, bringing its domestic cume to $89m.

So, yeah, it will probably crawl past the $100 million mark in North America. The entire Dakota Johnson/Jamie Dornan franchise has now earned over $1.25 billion worldwide on a combined production budget of $150 million. Even with marketing and related expenses, this is an obscenely profitable trilogy for Universal/Comcast Corp. and friends.

With a likely overall cume of just under $1.3b global, it’ll be one of the biggest R-rated franchises ever, behind only The Matrix ($1.6b over three films), The Hangover ($1.4b over three films) and Alien ($1.328b not counting the PG-13 Alien vs. Predator). I’m sure The Conjuring Universe will have something to say about that but ask me again next September after Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc.’s The Nun does its thing.

Peter Rabbit was the top domestic holdover this weekend, as Sony’s kid-targeted comedy earned $2.845 million (-26%) for a likely $11.4m (-34%) third weekend. That’ll give the $50m animated/live-action hybrid a $70.5m 17-day total. Sigh, I told them they should have picked up Paddington 2 when they had the chance, but now we won’t get Paddington v Peter Rabbit cross-over event.

Sony’s other kid-targeted biggie, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, earned another $1.34 million (-28%) on its tenth Friday. We should see a $5.5m (-33%) weekend for a new $387.1m domestic total. That means it’ll soon pass Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($389m) to become Karen Gillan’s top domestic grosser. At which point, it’ll be the top domestic earner for every major cast member.

Clint Eastwood’s The 15:17 to Paris earned another $1 million (-52%) on its third Friday for a likely $3.5m (-54%) weekend. That’ll give the true-life action drama a $32.1m 17-day cume, which is about in line with Eastwood’s smaller-scale directorial efforts. It’s no blow-out hit, but it’s staying the course.

The Greatest Showman earned $905,000 on Friday (-32%), setting the stage for a $3.375 million (-33%) tenth weekend. That’s the biggest drop thus far for the PT Barnum biopic, but by any other standard it’s still walking on air. A $160.741m domestic total will put it near the top five on the list of the leggiest releases ever among all remotely wide openers.

Early Man should have $1.44 million (-55%) in its second weekend, giving the Aardman animated comedy a poor $6.519m ten-day cume. Samson should earn around $1.16m (-40%) for an also-lousy $3.39m ten-day cume. In better news, The Post will have $79m domestic by Sunday, while fellow Oscar contenders Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri, The Shape of Water and The Darkest Hour will have $50m, $55m and $54m domestic respectively. And I, Tonya will have $28m tomorrow while The Phantom Thread will end its ninth weekend with $18.6m.

Congratulations are in order for Fifty Shades Freed actor Brant Daugherty – he just announced that he’s engaged!

The 32-year-old actor popped the question to longtime girlfriend Kim Hidalgo during a trip to Amsterdam a few weeks ago.

Brant is best known for his roles as Sawyer in Fifty Shades Feed and Noel Kahn on Pretty Little Liars. He also competed on a season of Dancing With the Stars!Earlier this month saw the release of the third and final chapter in the Fifty Shades trilogy, Fifty Shades Freed. The erotic romance films, based on E.L. James’ novels have grossed over $1 billion worldwide, courting no shortage of controversy along the way. Now it appears that such controversy will continue right up until Ana and Christian disappear from cinema screens forever. In the latest kerfuffle, a Catholic group in France is attempting to ban Fifty Shades Freed for children under 12.

According to The Local fr, the traditionalist Catholic lobby group, Promouvoir (Promote) is taking on Fifty Shades Freed and attempting to have the erotic film banned for children under 12. The group is arguing to French courts that the sadomasochistic relationship featured in the film is inappropriate for young children. The group is citing the French film classification rules which allow for a film to be banned for children if it might negatively affect a child’s emotional development. Promouvoir was previously successful in getting Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist completely banned from French cinemas and raised the rating for Blue is the Warmest Color from 12 to 18. This also isn’t the first time the group has taken on the Fifty Shades franchise. In 2015, it attempted to raise the rating for the first movie, Fifty Shades of Grey, but was unsuccessful. Now you’re probably thinking to yourself “Twelve year olds can see Fifty Shades in France?” The answer is yes, they can.

French film ratings are called certificates, and they are based on a recommendation from the Board of Film Classification. The Ministry of Culture then issues a distribution certificate that falls into one of five categories: U-Tous Publics (All Publics), 12-banned for those under 12, 16-banned for those under 16, 18-banned for those under ei19hteen and Interdiction which is a total ban on the film. Fifty Shades Freed currently enjoys a U rating, meaning anyone of any age can see it. If this seems like a European thing, it’s not. In Britain, you have to be 18 to see the completion of this great love story, so clearly this is just a France thing and probably just reflects a difference in culture and what we deem as taboo.

I don’t have kids and I’m not French, but I will say that Fifty Shades Freed does seem like it might be a bit too mature for those under 12, but this could just be a cultural difference. There is also the question of what parent is letting their young child see this movie or bringing them along to see it. So I am curious how many kids in France are actually going to see this or if the problem is simply that they are allowed to. France isn’t the only foreign country having issues with Fifty Shades, Russia’s Culture Minister recently took aim at the film simply for not being good and taking away opportunities from other more deserving films. That’s the real story here. If kids under 12 are watching Fifty Shades in their formative years, what is that doing to their view of cinema? Think of the children, France!

Fifty Shades Freed is in theaters now. For all the latest in movie news and how Twilight fanfic can get out of hand, stay tuned to CinemaBlend. The third and final movie in the trilogy was revealed over the weekend to have passed the $300 million barrier at the worldwide box office; a great achievement for a movie with such a low review score from critics.

What’s more, it has pushed the entire franchise over the jaw-dropping $1.25 billion mark. With the cumulative budget for all three movies clocking in at well below $200 million, that’s quite a considerable profit.

It’s also impressive seeing as there are some international territories where the movie isn’t even playing, due to its raunchy content.Overall, Freed is tracking to finish considerably lower than Fifty Shades of Grey’s $571 million total, and only a hairline below Fifty Shades Darker’s $381.1 million.Deadline cites a reasonable estimate now for it at $340 million worldwide for Freed by the time it exits cinemas.Johnson and Dornan are already moving on to other things: Johnson will next be seen in Bad Times at the El Royale, Suspiria and The Peanut Butter Falcon.
